Mermaid Cottages Vacation Rentals  is a collection of Cozy Cottages and Historic Homes that welcome pets of all shapes, sizes and numbers! They have hosted everything from an entire family of Black Labs ( mother , father and their 6 puppies) , cats who just enjoyed lying around on the window ledges,  2 Ferrets who loved the sun porch,  turtles in their terrariums,  and parrots who couldn’t stop talking the entire time they were here!   Each home has different guidelines on what type and number of pets are allowed, but they  always try and help everyone who wants to travel with their pets to do so. Many of the homes have fenced in yards which makes it even easier for your dogs to run and play, we provide dog treats in all the homes and many also have baskets of toys to enjoy.  Mermaid Cottages truly believes that a family vacation should include all members of the family even though that rely on their humans to make all the travel plans for them.  Humans and their pets will enjoy a visit to Mermaid Cottages.

Tybee Vacation Rentals: Love Shack (1403 5th Ave)

by Lisa Scarbrough

The Love Shack is a cozy rental on a low-traffic street, perfect for dog walks. A spacious screened-in front porch with ceiling fans provides a cool spot for dogs to relax and rest while their people socialize. The plush grassy front yard is perfect for pups who enjoy sunbathing, but parents should note that it is not fenced-in. A fenced-in backyard provides shade for dogs who need to stretch their legs though dogs needing lots of room to exercise should be granted a trip to the local dog park on the north end of the island. A note of caution: be sure to check that the gates to the backyard are closed before letting your pup loose. We failed to do so, and Kuma took the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon sprint off-leash. The interior of the home is spacious and offers plenty of room for dogs to manuever around their people without causing incident. Jake found his favorite spot right in front of the fireplace, even if the lovely Tybee weather leaves little opportunity for its use.

Tybee Vacation Rentals

One of the greatest aspects of Tybee is its hospitality. From the moment you walk through the doors of the Tybee Vacation Rentals office, you’ll receive just that. You’ll receive a warm welcome from a very knowledgeable staff who will not only give you a print out with directions to your property but help you to learn about activities and attractions to enjoy your stay. They even have a 24-hour DVD rental vending machine and gift shop for souvenirs.

Tybee Vacation Rentals is happy to welcome your adult canine family members (sorry, no puppies or felines allowed). They do require a $75 non-refundable pet fee per pet, $50 extra for monthly rentals, and they offer a discount for repeat visits. You will be required to provide your pet’s age, weight and breed on the lease agreement prior to entering any rental property. Renters are expected to clean up the yards after their pets and to keep pets off all furniture. Tybee Vacation Rentals allows for potential renters to search for and preview pet-friendly properties through it’s rental search.

Tybee Island Rentals

2008 October 7
by Lisa Scarbrough

Are you planning a vacation to Tybee? Why not get a pet-friendly rental and bring your pets along for the trip!

PetFriendlyTybee.com is happy to provide reviews on rental agencies that allow pets. A few things you should note before making your reservation:

1. Call ahead with your pet’s information. Some rentals are breed, size or species exclusive.

2. Be prepared to pay non-refundable pet fees.

3. While your pet may be welcomed in a rental property, excessive barking is not. Tybee Island does have a noise ordinance. Dogs barking non-stop for 30 minutes or longer will receive a $300 fine if any neighbors complain.

4. Try to maintain the comforts of home. If your pet is used to sleeping in a crate, bring one with you. Do not expect that your pets will be allowed on the furniture in rental properties, so bring a favorite blanket or bed for them.

5. Remember to bring your pet’s food. While Tybee does have a grocery store, specialty pet foods are not carried. Bring enough to last for the duration of your stay.

6. Be prepared to clean up after your pet. If you are used to just letting them run the yard at home to do their business, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with and remember to bring poop bags.

7. Some properties have fences but most do not, so don’t forget the leash. There are two dog parks on Tybee for plenty of playtime exercise. Remember, pets are NOT allowed on Tybee’s beaches, anytime, anywhere.

8. Tethering pets is illegal in Chatham County, so do not plan to leave your pet on a tie-out while you go to the beach.

9. Georgia State Law requires that pets have a yearly rabies vaccination. Your pet will need its rabies tag on its collar.

10. Remember the safety of your pet when traveling to your destination. Put them in a seat belt harness or crate. Pets running loose in the car can become a distraction to the driver and risk being ejected from the vehicle in case of an accident. Don’t forget to check that your microchip information is current before you depart in the event that you and your pet become separated while traveling.

Taking a vacation to Tybee can be a memorable experience for your family. Make sure to create the same for your pet.

Tybee Island Pirate Fest - October 10 & 11, 2008

Lisa and Tiki at the 2006 Tybee Island Pirate Fest

It’s the annual invasion of pirates on Tybee Island! The Pirate Fest is one of the island’s most family-friendly festivals offered each year. But did you know that it is also pet-friendly? That’s right, pet parents are invited to bring their pets to the events held in the South Beach Parking Lot which includes shopping at the thieves’ market and concerts Friday and Saturday night.

This year, a pet pirate costume contest has been added. Registration is $5 per pet at the Coastal Pet Rescue booth and starts at 10 am with judging at 11 am. First place wins a gift basket and gift certificate from TailsSpin. 100% of the entry fees go to Coastal Pet Rescue.

A few rules to remember:

  1. Pets must be on leash at all times.
  2. Pets must have proof of current rabies vaccination.
  3. Cleanup after your pets (poop bags are available at the Coastal Pet Rescue booth).
  4. No dogs on the beach!

And if you are in the market to add to your family, Coastal Pet Rescue will have pets looking for new homes throughout the weekend. Watch them in the parade on Saturday at 3pm.

So come out, enjoy an afternoon at the beach and let your dog show their inner pirate for a day!
